Band of Brothers

It is two years earlier: in Camp Toccoa, GA, volunteers train for America's new military experiment, the paratroops. Theirs is one of nine companies in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment: E, aka Easy Company, commanded by the domineering Lt. Herbert Sobel. Through a regimen that involves frequent six-mile climbs up and down Currahee, a local mountain, Sobel succeeds in drilling the men into an elite unit. But his heavy-handed tactics, punishments for petty or imagined infractions, and strategic failures during manoeuvres, alienate Sobel from his men, who prefer his cool-headed second-in-command, Lt. Winters. After the 506th is shipped to England to complete training, Sobel harasses Winters by citing him for failing to inspect a latrine on time. When Winters requests a trial by court-martial, six of his sergeants: Salty Harris, Chuck Grant, Bill Guarnere, Carwood Lipton, Mike Ranney and Floyd Talbert request transfer rather than follow Sobel into combat.

Tue 24th October

Band of Brothers

Landing in a field, Winters finds he has lost his rifle and supply bag. He teams up with a private from another company, John Hall, and sets out to find their units. During the night they link up with a few more soldiers, and ambush a horse-drawn German supply convoy, their first enemy encounter. Regrouping in a nearby town, Winters runs into Easy's Lt. 'Buck' Compton, who tells him that Lt. Meehan is unaccounted for, which puts Winters in charge. His orders are to lead an attack on a nearby cluster of German artillery pieces endangering the seaborne infantry at Utah Beach. Winters deploys a small group on the entrenched enemy positions, and eventually takes four artillery pieces in succession, disabling them with TNT. The euphoria is tempered, however, when Winters finds Hall dead, killed by machine-gun fire. The mission is successful, but Winters has lost his first man as acting company commander.

Tue 24th October

Band of Brothers

Lt. Harry Welsh delivers Easy's next orders: take Carentan, the only town where armoured vehicles from Omaha and Utah beaches can link up. Winters briefs the men, and Easy heads into Carentan, encountering fierce resistance from Germans holed up in buildings. The town is eventually secured, although Winters gets hit above his ankle by ricochet gunfire.

Tue 24th October

Band of Brothers

The respite doesn't last long; in September the men learn they're being airlifted to Holland as part of Operation Market-Garden, a joint American-British offensive that aims at securing quick access to Germany and ending the war by Christmas. Unlike Normandy, the daytime parachute drop is executed smoothly, and the company is greeted as heroes as they enter the town of Eindhoven after minimal resistance. All that changes when the company marches to Nuenen, where Easy is met by a brutal attack that ends with Compton wounded, a retreat ordered, and 'Bull' Randleman stranded in the town overnight. It's a sobering and bloody initiation to combat for the replacements.

Tue 24th October

Band of Brothers

As Winters labours over a report on the dike mission, Heyliger leads a rescue of British soldiers escaping from the besieged town of Arnhem. An anxious Winters worries about Easy (now one of three companies he helps command), especially after Heyliger is shot and wounded by a nervous sentry. After moving off the line to France, Nixon insists that Winters take a break and see Paris. Winters is haunted there by the memory of a young German he killed at close range on the dike. As he returns to the Company at Mourmelon, news comes of a massive German counterattack in the Ardennes Forest. Winters helps Easy race there to hold the line, his men ill-equipped for the cold and the battle ahead.

Wed 25th October

Morning

Band of Brothers

Medic Eugene Roe is overwhelmed, on edge and close to combat exhaustion, when he finds friendship with a Belgian nurse. Easy Company spends a miserable Christmas in the trenches, but is buoyed after receiving the news that the German army's demand for surrender was met with General McAuliffe's defiant answer: "Nuts!"

Wed 25th October

Band of Brothers

Several are killed and wounded in fierce shelling, compounded by the incompetence of their new commander, Lieutenant Dike, about whom Winters can do nothing. Easy takes Foy, but at an enormous cost.

Wed 25th October

Band of Brothers

Lt. Hank Jones, fresh from West Point and eager for combat experience, volunteers to lead, though he must convince a sceptical Winters. Also assigned to the patrol is Private David Webster, back in Easy after rehabilitation of an injury. While successful, the mission costs a soldier's life, prompting Winters to ignore the order to send out a second patrol the next night.

Wed 25th October

Band of Brothers

A patrol in a nearby forest discovers an abandoned Nazi concentration camp, still filled with emaciated prisoners. The local citizenry, unbelievably disavowing knowledge of its existence, is made to clean it up. Suddenly, news arrives from Berlin: Hitler is dead.

Wed 25th October

Band of Brothers

As German officers hand over their weapons, soldiers raid well-stocked wine cellars, snag souvenirs from residences, and endure one final tragedy when a replacement soldier cracks. Despite the fact that VE (Victory in Europe) Day has passed, Easy faces the prospect of imminent deployment to the Pacific Theatre. But as the men compare "points" to see who has earned enough to go home, word arrives that the Japanese have surrendered, ending the war and dissolving Easy Company. A memorable closing vignette tells what happened to Winters and some of his men after they returned to the States.

Wed 25th October

The Wizard of Lies

The headline-making true story about the deceptions, lies and betrayals of Bernie Madoff, the man who masterminded the most heinous financial swindle of our generation.

Wed 25th October

Band of Brothers

Wed 25th October

Band of Brothers

Wed 25th October

Band of Brothers

Wed 25th October

Noon

In 1900, John W. Thackery, a brilliant yet tortured doctor working at The Knickerbocker Hospital in New York, ascends to the role of chief surgeon after the unexpected departure of his mentor, J. M. Inside True Detective

A behind-the-scenes look at the production of True Detective season one, featuring interviews with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

Fri 27th October

True Detective

Two former Louisiana State CID partners, Martin Hart and Rustin Cohle, give separate statements to a pair of investigators about the murder of a prostitute, Dora Lange, 17 years earlier. As they look back, details of the crime, replete with occult overtones, are accompanied by insights into the detective's volatile partnership and personal lives.

Fri 27th October

Noon

True Detective

Under pressure to land a suspect in the Dora Lange murder, Quesada warns Hart and Cohle they might be replaced by three detectives from a new occult-crimes task force. The pair lobbies for extra time in order to follow up on a lead that takes them from a rural cathouse to an incinerated church. With his marriage to Maggie already strained by work, Hart ends up finding respite outside of home.

Fri 27th October

True Detective

A hidden image at the burned-out church leads Cohle and Hart to Joel Theriot, a tent-revival minister whose parishioners finger a scarred "tall man" seen with Dora Lange. Brought in for interrogation, a sex offender matching the description is quickly dismissed by Cohle, despite offering a confession. Hart gets side tracked after Maggie sets Cohle up with a friend at a C&W bar. Looking to establish a pattern of murder, Cohle pores over old case files, finding a connection with a woman assumed to have drowned years earlier.

Fri 27th October

True Detective

Hart and Cohle hunt for their newly identified suspect, Reggie Ledoux, a meth cooker who shared a cell with Dora Lange's husband and recently skipped parole. As Hart's personal life collapses around him, Cohle immerses himself in an old criminal identity from his narco days, contacting an East-Texas biker gang known to deal with their primary suspect.

Fri 27th October

True Detective

A violent denouement in the forest clears the Dora Lange case and turns Cohle and Hart into local heroes. Each man settles into a healthier rhythm of living as Hart returns to his family, and Cohle starts a relationship while gaining a reputation as a closer in interrogations. As time passes and his daughters grow older, Hart faces new tensions and temptations, and Cohle learns from a double-murder suspect that there could be much more to an old case than he'd once thought.

Fri 27th October

True Detective

In 2002, Cohle and Hart begin to fall back to familiar and violent obsessions. Hart exacts savage vengeance on a pair of teenage boys, and Cohle becomes convinced they left something undone in 1995. Working on his own, Cohle traces a sinister connection between missing children along the coast and evangelist Billy Lee Tuttle's Wellsprings Program.

Fri 27th October

True Detective

After Marty is shown a harrowing piece of evidence, he and Cohle forge a truce after years of vitriol, and we learn why Cohle returned to the state in 2010. Hart helps Cohle probe a murky conspiracy of disappearances connected to the Dora Lange murder, a path of connections that leads to the Tuttle family. Hart reconnects with Maggie after years without communication in order to confirm what the police wanted, and perhaps to say goodbye. Concerned that harm might come to him, Maggie pays Cohle a visit at the bar where he's working, but gets a cold shoulder for her efforts. Cohle and Hart uncover a connection to an old colleague and enact a plan to draw him out.

Fri 27th October

Evening

True Detective

After their interrogation of Geraci yields new info but no critical breaks, Hart and Cohle find themselves back at square one. However, a seemingly arbitrary detail in a photograph, along with a homeowner's old tax records, provides the pair with a vital new lead in their 17-year-old case. The two men pursue the lead to an apocalyptic confrontation.

Fri 27th October

Big Love

A modern polygamist, Bill Henrickson who struggles to keep up with the mounting demands from his three wives and kids.

Fri 27th October

Big Love

Margene's lack of inhibition - in the bedroom, in the kitchen - annoys the other sister-wives, and when her 'day' spills over into Barb's, Nicki decides to confront Bill about it, only to end up getting some spillover time of her own. Margene nearly walks in on the two of them, and overhears Bill using the same sweet nothings with Nicki that she had just used with him. Reeling in shock, Margene flees to a hiding place, before summoning the anger to confront her husband later in the day. But Bill has bigger concerns. Worried about Roman's (Harry Dean Stanton) threats, he looks into installing a security system at home, just as his father receives a hospital visit from the tyrannical compound leader. Roman warns Frank who's still recovering from arsenic poisoning, that Bill is not allowed in the compound unless he tows the line.

Fri 27th October

Big Love

With her son Wayne's birthday approaching, Nicki tries to plan an extravagant party at a hotel resort (just immediate family, 153 people) without informing the sister wives, or even Bill. When he finds out, she tries to assure him that her father offered to pay for it. After complaining about being stranded, Margene finally gets her own car and can barely contain her excitement, despite Bill's warning that "stewardship, not consumption, is the proper relationship to material wealth." To celebrate, she sneaks off with Ben for a joy ride around the neighborhood. When the security company arrives to install a motion-sensitive Home Invasion System, the wives become alarmed, pressing Bill to tell them what it is they need to be protected from.

Fri 27th October

Big Love

Bill seeks "clarity" after experiencing some unsettling dreams. Later, on a hunting trip with Ben, he finds the answer he's been searching for. Meanwhile, Barb gets a long-term teaching job, putting added pressure back home on Nicki and Margene. Also, Nicki fends off her creditors, Joey pays Bill a visit with some revealing news about Roman, Sarah is bailed out of a bad party by Heather, and Teenie bangs away the dragons during a lunar eclipse.

Fri 27th October

Big Love

After watching Barb charm a city councilman at a historic preservation event, Bill begins to see his wife through new eyes. A spontaneous roadside rendezvous re-ignites their sex life, and soon the two are sneaking off for clandestine trysts in a hotel. Nicki begins to suspect Bill is having an affair - and planning to bring in a fourth wife. She can't wait to be the one to tell Barb. For her part, Nicki is "so excited" for a fourth, especially as she's become really bored with Barb and Margie. Using a false name, Don calls the Attorney General's "polygamy czar" and tells him his mother was swindled by Roman's desert ranch scam, as Bill offers cues in the background. The man asks Don to bring his mother down to the office and file a statement.

Sat 28th October

Morning

Big Love

Nicki has Bill working hard at getting her pregnant again, but when Barb tries to set the schedule around Nicki's ovulation cycle, Nicki bristles. Barb insists it will be more efficient if they stick to a schedule. In a standoff, Nicki tells Barb she was wrong about Bill seeing a fourth. When Frank's first wife Roberta dies, Lois decides to confront her estranged husband at the wake. As his second wife, she's now entitled to become his first wife, and she wants the legal marriage. Following up on Don's call, Bill has drafted a letter to the Attorney General's office under the false name, offering details on Roman's real estate scam and the pending lawsuit. But as he's preparing to send it, he has second thoughts. He calls Roman and asks if they can meet to work out an agreement.

Sat 28th October

Big Love

Bill is mulling an expensive new ad campaign for Henrickson's Home Plus, one that will re-brand it as "Utah's family superstore", and include testimonials from employees and subliminal signals that they're entirely "homegrown". Don isn't so sure - he thinks the ad agency's budget is over the top, and they'll have to take a huge hit to absorb it. Having failed at his previous assignment, Alby is told that the Henricksons are no longer his concern. Roman tells his son to pack a small bag and sends him on a two day trip in the Buick, assuring him he's doing "God's work". On his mysterious journey, Alby stops at a convenient store, where he meets a handsome stranger and brings him back to his motel. As the man makes advances on him, Alby dodges them, preparing a sandwich in a Norman Bates-like trance, sharpening a large knife. When the man asks if they are going to have sex, Alby fakes a freak out, sending the stranger fleeing for the door.

Sat 28th October

Big Love

The Henrickson's have company. After their crock pot exploded and burned down two rooms, Bill's extended family got evicted from their motel and they had nowhere else to go. The three houses are now home to Lois, Joey and Wanda, Frank's wives and their pet. (Frank has been banished to his truck; Bill won't have him in the house for more than a shower and a meal per day.) Bill has other matters to attend to. He's planning to bury Roman under an avalanche of litigation - everything from "unjust enrichment" to physical assault against Lois during the eviction. But Bill's lawyer isn't so sure he should go through with it, especially since Roman's attorneys have indicated a willingness to negotiate.

Sat 28th October

With both their lawyers present, Roman and Bill sign off on their new agreement, and Bill returns the prized guitar. Excited about breaking ground on the third store, Bill decides to throw a lavish lobster bash celebrating his freedom, along with the Embry's engagement - they've voted unanimously to take on a fourth wife. On Nicki's night, Bill is back on his game in the bedroom, so she decides now is a good time to come clean about her debt. Bill's euphoria quickly gives way to rage and he drives off into the night. Barb plays dumb when Bill breaks the news the next day, but he suspects she'd been keeping Nicki's secret all along, enraging him even more.

Sat 28th October

Big Love

Lois returns from Mexico and now she needs Bill to drive her to the compound in time to help Wanda deliver her baby. On the way, Bill tries to enlist his mother's help in his latest mission: he's hoping to find a member of the Priesthood Council who will turn mole on Roman. Lois tells him he's playing with fire. Barb's sister Cindy is in town for business and she needs to talk to her: their mother prays every night that she'll have Barb back in her life again. Barb has been hoping for reconciliation too. Ben gives his girlfriend Brynn a present he made in wood shop, but when she tries to give him one in return, he rejects her advances. She thinks he should find someone who wants to stay a virgin, like he does.

Sat 28th October

Big Love

In the event of her untimely death, Barb now wants her kids raised by her sister-wives, which means all three of them must revise their wills. They agree on a simple rule: if any of them were to die along with Bill, their kids will be raised by the next youngest sister wife. Barb and Margene are touched by their newfound sense of commitment to each other, but Nicki secretly books an appointment with Bill's attorney. Bill is being recruited by the prestigious Salt Lake Leadership League, a country club of business leaders that rejected him nearly a decade ago. Thrilled to be courted by the group, Bill meets resistance when he tells Don and Barb about it. They're leery of the public profile it would require. Ernest Holloway shows up at Home Plus with a ragtag pile of papers, every UEB share he's been issued since 1962. Bill offers to take them to his lawyer to see if he can buy them and take over his seat on the Priesthood Council.

Sat 28th October

Joey and Bill prepare to take over Ernest Holloway's seat at the next UEB Council meeting and Alby and Roman are beginning to suspect something's up. Holloway has gone missing with his wives and Bill has been spotted on the compound. Now that the settlement agreement forbids them to evict any of his family members, Roman tells Alby to find others ways to contain Bill. Barb has been preparing for the Mother of the Year event at the Governor's mansion, and Nicki is not happy about it. Adding to her problems, Rhonda is still staying with them, claiming she's still in the drama competition and she wants to know why the other mothers of the house aren't in the running for an award. Rhonda later admits to Barb that she sometimes misses school and when Barb asks if she'd like to stay with them and finish out the school year, the bride-to-be is ecstatic.

Tue 31st October

The Pacific

In the immediate aftermath of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Marine Sgt. John Basilone prepares to ship out and confront the enemy somewhere in the Pacific, while budding journalist Robert Leckie enlists in the Marine Corps. Eugene Sledge, unable to enlist because of a heart murmur, says farewell to his best friend, Sidney Phillips, who is about to leave for boot camp. Exactly eight months after Pearl Harbor, the 1st Marine Division, including Leckie and Phillips, lands on Guadalcanal in order to secure its strategically vital airfield and prepare for the inevitable counterattack.

Tue 31st October

The Pacific

Basilone and the 7th Marines arrive on Guadalcanal to reinforce Leckie and the rest of the 1st Marine Division as they continue to defend the crucial airstrip. Basilone plays a key role in repelling a night time Japanese attack, but suffers a frightful personal loss. After four months of continuous action, the exhausted and disease-ridden members of the 1st Marine Division are evacuated off the island.

Tue 31st October

The Pacific

Physically and mentally debilitated after the four-month ordeal on Guadalcanal, Leckie, Basilone and thousands of their comrades land in Melbourne, where they are greeted by adoring crowds and viewed as the saviours of Australia. While his buddies carouse, Leckie becomes deeply attached to an Australian woman and her first-generation Greek family. Meanwhile, Basilone is awarded the Medal of Honor and is asked to return home to help sell US war bonds.

Tue 31st October

The Pacific

Finally enlisted as a marine, Sledge trains for combat at Camp Elliott. The 1st Marine Division lands at Cape Gloucester on the Japanese-held island of New Britain. As Leckie and the other marines battle the Japanese, they quickly realise that the more ominous enemy is the smothering jungle itself. Having survived Gloucester and being stationed on the godforsaken island of Pavuvu, Leckie begins displaying the physical and mental effects of combat and is sent to a naval hospital on nearby Banika for psychiatric observation.

Tue 31st October

The Pacific

Basilone's celebrity grows as he travels across the country on the war bonds tour. On Pavuvu, Sledge, assigned to the 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, is briefly reunited with Phillips and Leckie rejoins his company. Sledge then gets his first taste of combat as he, Leckie, and the rest of the 1st Marine Division meet fierce Japanese resistance while landing on the intricately and heavily defended coral island of Peleliu.
